It all centers around you –
5 Methods of diverting your attention from the Inward to the Outward.

Have you ever been told by an individual “Do you know it is not just about you? Has any individual informed you to stop paying attention to yourself alone and consider others too? Studies have proven that about 6% of the entire population has exaggerated self-worth or are narcissists. These individuals always consider their problems to be more important than others.

What should then be said about every other person? If 6% of the entire population is considered to be like this, does this imply that the other 94% are concerned about others? This is quite unimaginable. Can you consider someone who overtakes your vehicle in traffic just to get to a meeting, a narcissist? Can you consider an instructor having a bad day and consequently scores your kid poorly inconsiderate or self-absorbed? Can you regard your sibling whose birthday was forgotten, to indicate that you have no love for anyone else?

It’s both yes and no. The fact remains that how we see the world is simply based on both eyes belonging to you. Your perspective consists of what you’ve processed, your previous encounters, upbringing, human nature, social status, religious association, a system of belief and the undesirable events you’ve passed through. The fact remains that the world is generally not viewed with a goal in mind or a receptive perspective. Everyone has been polluted with the congested channel they use in seeing the world.

One main issue people face is to refuse to acknowledge their partiality. It is possible to have the impression that you are extremely liberal (and comparable with other people which might be true). You might even focus on the fact that you assist and do pleasant things to others. You can also offer people your skills, money and time without any ulterior motive. It is also possible you are an individual who loves to have all the facts.

But the fact remains that you will always be hindered by the convictions and opinions that do not allow you to fully understand the situation. Whenever intelligent individuals inform you to step into someone else’s shoes, they want you to envision how life would be from the perspective of others. You will still be unable to fully understand someone else’s experiences, challenges even if you show care or compassion. It is practically impossible because their perspective will always be diluted by your own.

This doesn’t imply that everyone is inconsiderate or has a negative attitude. It only shows how significant it is to identify the ongoing dynamics and then put in efforts to be impartial and always have others in your thoughts. You need to pay more attention to yourself. In a happy way, not in the monetary aspect, but finding a wealth of happiness that comes from letting go of yourself in the service of others.

But if you place focus only on yourself, how can you also pay attention to others? Below are a couple of things that can be carried out to also have other people in your thoughts and reduce those clouded filters just a little.

1. Meditation:

Occasionally work on freeing your mind. If you have difficulties sitting in a position for a long period, carry out walking meditation. Also, meditate while driving, but ensure your eyes are not closed. Meditation focuses on liberating the thoughts in your mind and being open-minded. Take notice of your inward thoughts while meditating. Don’t conclude on them, simply recognize them and carefully push them back.

2. Read the life stories and posts on individuals who had encountered affliction, succeed amidst challenging responsibilities and faced difficulties in life.

Studying the life journey of others, sometimes gives you insights on several approaches people use to handle life happenings and difficulties.

3. Identify the outcomes of your processed thoughts.

Eliminate any negative words like “he is simply lazy”, “she is just full of herself”.  Advise yourself that you are not fully aware of the meaning of being lazy. There might be an unknown reason she displays an egoistic character. Have a diary or record on your mobile phone each time you stop yourself from doing something. Be mindful of how your perspective affects your thinking involuntarily.

4. Be extra inquisitive.

Possessing a remarkable spirit makes you impartial. Always try to understand the reason behind an individual’s negative attitude instead of reacting to it. What could be the driver behind their character? You don’t have to read their minds, but try to create the opportunity to become fascinated by things that you literally don’t appreciate.

5. Be a long-lasting student.

You have developed a personal point of view about attitude and life itself. There are situations where it all goes wrong and also works perfectly. Remain open-minded. Endeavor to discover something new. You don’t have to alter the way you think, simply become more knowledgeable about the things you were ignorant about.

It truly centers around you, however; this doesn’t have to be. Endeavor to divert your focus from yourself and inward to the extraordinary world available out there.
