Finding joy even when your family doesn't give it
Having a sour relationship with family members is a common experience that almost everyone has to contend with every now, and then. It is usually in the peak of the festive season that everyone seems to step on each other's toe. The family is supposed to be a close-knit circuit that offers support and unconditional love, but this is usually not the case. Challenges come in different forms that test "the love" in a family.
The holiday season is the peak of the problem. This is supposed to be a time of love, merriment, and enjoyment, but it is hardly the case. Most families are struggling to find love and are living in an unhappy situation.
The truth is that you and your family don't have to be unhappy. In fact, you can make the right changes in your life so you can experience that joy that you once had. If you observe that most conflicts usually come around the festive periods, try and make plans in September/October to enjoy a whole new family experience. Start your preparations now, so you can enjoy the festive period rather than dread it.
- • Work on yourself. Everything starts and ends with you. You have to ensure that you are self-secure. Be in control of yourself at all times. Don't allow your environment to dictate who you are.
- • Practice your breathing. This may sound weird, but it works wonders. Learning how to breathe can help you diffuse stress when you least expect. Before you say anything in a conflict environment, just take a deep breath, and as you exhale, you will observe that the trouble just fades away.
- • Come along with a friend. Having someone around that, you are comfortable with can do you a whole lot of good. Don't understand the value of having someone that you can accommodate in your life. Such people can help you diffuse any problematic situation, and also enable you to enjoy the moment.
- • Do something fun before or after you meet up with your family. Whatsoever activity brings you much fun, just go for it. You might see a movie, or take a long walk, or spend time in the company of friends. Whatsoever you see as fun, try and do it before or after you see your family, it will make you feel better about yourself.
- • Say this to yourself repeatedly, "This will not last," as much as possible. The holidays come with their challenges and difficulties, but the good news is that they don't last forever. As long as you can weather the storm, you will be alright.
