Communication is the bedrock of society, and it defines how we relate to people. But despite its importance, lots of people find it difficult to communicate effectively. Many people don't even believe in what they say. Nevertheless, there is the right way to communicate, a more authentic way that helps you to say what you mean, and means what you say.

If you want to be a more effective communicator, then the following steps will be of great help to you.

The truth is that you and your family don't have to be unhappy. In fact, you can make the right changes in your life so you can experience that joy that you once had. If you observe that most conflicts usually come around the festive periods, try and make plans in September/October to enjoy a whole new family experience. Start your preparations now, so you can enjoy the festive period rather than dread it.

  • • Consider your goal whenever you want to deliver a positive or negative remark. What do you hope to accomplish with the remark? Will it make the receiver alter their behavior? Will it make the person more aware of themselves? These are all the pointers you have to consider before you give any sort of feedback to anyone. You shouldn't just say something because you want to say it, have an expectation in mind and look at your overall intention.
  • • Take permission and be sensitive enough to know if it is the right time to offer any feedback. Make sure the person knows what you are about to do. Sometimes letting them know you want to share something helps them to prepare themselves to receive what you want to say. If you just come out of nowhere and start giving feedback, it doesn't matter if what you are saying is right, they will automatically become defensive towards you.
  • • Be objective as much as you can, and do not deviate from facts in your feedback. Try to stick to the evidence that you have, and don't make judgmental remarks. Understanding this will help you present your feedback much better.
  • • Be aware of your own thoughts and feelings. There is nothing wrong in having a form of reaction to the events that have happened, and you voice it out. Be confident enough to share how their overall reaction affected you.
  • • Never forget that you are not responsible for the way the other person reacts. You are only responsible for your feedback and the way you deliver it, and nothing more. As earlier mentioned, just ensure there is a goal to what you are saying.
  • • Remember the other person has their own point of view, so don't completely ignore their input. Understand their own perspective first. You can inquire from them, and try to understand why they acted the way they do. Letting them talk while you listen with genuine interest can help you resolve any issue sooner rather than later.
  • • Always remember that not everyone learned the ethos of proper communication, and most people don't know how to open up honestly and productively. Effective communication is a skill that most people don't have. So, be prepared to practice over and over again, so that at all point in time, you can say what you mean, and mean what you say. Keep it up, and others around you will start learning from you.
